The Occupational Therapy Service approved to deliver RoSPA qualifications

The Occupational Therapy Service (TOTS), a leading independent practice which has recently expanded its educational courses to include moving and handling, is proud to announce RoSPA accreditation.

Led by Deborah Harrison, Moving and Handling Lead at TOTS, the practice now offers two RoSPA courses – the Level 2 Award in Proportionate People Handling (RQF) and the Level 3 Award for Proportionate Safer People Handling Trainers (RQF). Both qualifications are designed to upskill professionals while helping organisations establish consistent, safer and more person-centred standards. Through Deborah’s vast experience, training can be tailored to different roles, settings and objectives without compromising the requirements of the regulated qualification.

Explaining why TOTS chose to apply for RoSPA accreditation, Deborah said:

“Quite simply, because it isn’t easy; they are Ofqual regulated. We wanted our customers to know that when they attend one of our courses, they aren’t simply receiving a certificate. They are receiving training that has been quality assured, scrutinised and continually reviewed against recognised industry standards. RoSPA challenged us in ways that other accreditation organisations hadn’t. They wanted to see the evidence, the processes, the systems, the course content, the learning outcomes and the way our trainers actually deliver the training. Accreditation isn’t about getting the centre logo; it’s about being able to keep it.”

As with all TOTS education, its RoSPA training is client and outcome focused. Deborah continues: 

“Our training can be tailored to meet the specific needs of each organisation. For example, if you work in paediatric moving and handling, we can train your whole team to the same recognised standard. The Level 3 Award for Proportionate Safer People Handling Trainers (RQF) goes beyond teaching particular handling techniques or how to support someone with one person. The content can be adapted to reflect the situations, equipment and challenges that learners encounter in their own roles.”

“Many professionals are required to train families and colleagues, whether formally or through practical demonstrations. An NHS team, for example, may need to develop skills in using a PAT slide with several members of staff. We can work collaboratively with the organisation to identify exactly what its teams need and when the training should be delivered. An equipment supplier may prefer to divide the course into different sessions throughout the year. Alternatively, it may want to develop the confidence and presentation skills of its sales team so they can deliver effective equipment demonstrations or run their own lunch-and-learn sessions. This flexible approach ensures that the qualification is relevant, practical and directly applicable in the workplace.”
